M. L. Hamilton delivers a refreshing and unforgettable heroine in Pendant, along with suspense that kept me turning pages far too late into the night.
Elaine Sutterfeld is an anti-heroine in the truest sense. She survived a nightmare—though “survived” might be too generous a word. For years, she merely existed. Crushed by guilt and allowing her school district employer’s narrative of her failure to define her, Elaine retreated into a self-imposed cocoon. Her world shrank to her faithful husband and the occasional polite exchange with a neighbor he befriended.
More than a decade later, a break in the case reignites hope. At last, answers seem within reach, justice appears possible. But when tragedy strikes—not once, but twice—Elaine is knocked completely off balance. In her isolation, she realizes too late the cost of pushing everyone away. With no one left to trust except her neighbor, she finds herself in the crosshairs of a murderer who believes she holds the key to his exposure.
Forced into hiding, Elaine must piece together a puzzle without even knowing what the finished picture looks like. Hamilton masterfully builds tension as Elaine confronts both the external threat and the internal prison she’s lived in for years.
The care home where Elaine briefly takes refuge offers a delightful ensemble of characters and a welcome—if short-lived—breather from the mounting danger. I would happily read an entire novel featuring these wise and spirited women. (Might I suggest a future showdown with a corrupt developer trying to displace them? I’d preorder that in a heartbeat.)
Ultimately, Pendant is a story about guilt, courage, and the long road back to connection. You’ll have to read it yourself to discover how Elaine faces her fears—and whether justice finally prevails.
Pendant is available on Amazon.
