Amanda Cox has crafted a compelling story about the damage secrets can inflict on the people we love. This dual-timeline novel follows Sarah, her mother Rosemary, and her grandmother Glory Ann—and their connection to Old Depot Grocery.
Because my father owned the local grocery store in the small Oklahoma town where I grew up until I was in junior high, I could relate to the difficult choices the characters faced as they struggled with whether to sell the store or keep it running on life support. My hometown grocery store also faced competition from chain stores in neighboring towns, so the story’s struggles felt especially familiar to me.
The small-town setting brought back memories of my own hometown, and even the sibling squabbles felt a little familiar. I was especially glad we got to see Rosemary’s sister, Jessamine’s, point of view toward the end of the book.
There’s a bit of a Prodigal Daughter theme woven into the story—not so much that one daughter is wayward, but that one daughter leaves home while the daughter who stays behind to care for Old Depot feels overlooked and taken for granted.
Ms. Cox certainly knows how to stir up family drama. My heart broke along with the main characters as they tried to bury the things they considered their failures. But, as the title suggests, secrets have a way of eventually finding their way into the light.
I loved the author’s descriptions and enjoyed trying to piece together everyone’s secrets as the story unfolded. The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery is a heartfelt story about family, forgiveness, and the consequences of keeping secrets. I look forward to reading more of Amanda Cox’s books.
