Equal parts The Jesus Revolution movie and Cinderella, Marline Williams gives us a groovy romcom dipped in faith with All Men Are Liars. Keep in mind, it's a 70's version of Cinderella, so replace the glass slippers with blue suede clogs, the ballgown with miniskirts and bell bottoms, and the pumpkin coach with a cafeteria tray and a snowy slope.
During high school, no one asked Dana Whitman to the ball or on a date even. The drama teacher overlooked her for lead roles in plays. Praise the Lord, all of that is about to change.
While navigating her freshman year at a Christian college, Dana does a little soul searching. As a young Christian woman how should she respond to the hormones kicking into fourth gear? Frustrated by fellow students and faculty trying to suck all the joy from her faith journey, she faces a dilemma: conform to the expectations of those around her or boldly challenge the status quo.
The clothing descriptions and tunes mentioned are "right on" for the time period, and the author's witty narrative cracked me up.
"'It seems absurdly simple to me. If (most) dancing on campus is taboo, why in the world would you invite a steel drum band to perform? Even rhythmless clods have the urge to shake something when those island rhythms get going.'"
"Who could blame Dana for starting a conga line at the steel drum concert?"
Slip into your comfiest jammies, grab that snack that used to be your guilty pleasure before counting calories was a thing, and take a groovy trip back to 1973, compliments of All Men Are Liars.
