'Tis the season to rock those cozy sweaters and scarves and indulge in all things pumpkin-spiced. This chocolate chip pumpkin scone recipe comes compliments of Fred Meyer's website, so consider buying the ingredients from a Fred Meyer, Kroger, Harris Teeter, or any other grocery store owned by Kroger.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Scone Recipe
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Serves: 8
Ingredients
2 1⁄2 cups All purpose flour
1⁄3 cup Sugar
1 1⁄2 tbsp. Pumpkin pie spice
* I add 1 tbsp. cinnamon (because I love cinnamon)
1 tbsp. Baking powder
1⁄4 tsp. Salt
1 stick (8 Tbsp.) Cold butter
1 cup Mini chocolate chips
1⁄2 cup Canned pumpkin
2⁄3 cup Heavy cream
1 Egg
1 tbsp. Turbinado sugar, Optional
Directions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 400° F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease a scone dish.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, *cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. Using a box grater, grate the stick of butter into the dry ingredients. Use your hands to gently blend the ingredients together. Mix in the chocolate chips.
*Instead of grating butter, I soften butter and use a knife to add a little at a time to the dry ingredients before blending with my hands.
Step 3
In a medium size bowl, whisk together the canned pumpkin, heavy cream, and egg.
Step 4
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and use a spatula to form a dough. Fold out the dough onto a cutting board and shape into a disc. Cut into 8 slices.
*My round disc is approximately 8 inches in diameter.
Step 5
Place each scone onto the prepared pan or dish. Press in the turbinado sugar if using onto the top of each scone.
Step 6
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown but still soft and fluffy.
*20 minutes works best for me.
Step 7
Cool completely. Keep in an airtight container for up to three days.
You're Welcome
Don't you hate when the recipe you find online makes you scroll through unending pages of information before you find the actual recipe? I do too, which is why I placed the recipe top and center and included my tips, hints, and rambling thoughts afterward.
Confession
Personally, scones don't rev my tastebuds, but they do for my coffee aficionado husband and daughter, who love these. In their opinions, scones pair perfectly with a steaming cup of joe. They suggest my disdain for most people's "best part of waking up" prevents me from appreciating the British pastry.
One of the problems with being over 50 is the distribution of excess calories to the least desired body locations. So I don't waste calories on a dessert, unless I love it.
The Sacrifices We Make for Loved Ones
Despite my "scone prohibition", I bake the chocolate chip pumpkin pastry regularly for my family. The recipe is easy, but shh, don't spill this little secret to my hubby and daughter. Like the mom in the 1988 Rice Krispies Treat commercial, I pretend to slave in the kitchen for hours to prepare the treat for my loving (and occasionally not so lovable) family.
The pumpkin scones could make a nice addition to your Thanksgiving breakfast or brunch and/or a nice gift during the holidays to your coffee loving friends.
Trust me, if I can successfully prepare this recipe, you can too. You will never see me on the Great American Baking Show or Cupcake Wars. How bakers pull cupcakes out of the oven with centers done and with outsides not overdone represents one of the great mysteries of life. So swallow your fear, break out the ingredients, and whip up a batch of chocolate chip pumpkin scones for your family and neighbors!
